Do Niger Delta militants posses missiles: Opinion

The struggle against marginalization for the emancipation of the Niger Delta region has given rise to many armed groups in the Niger Delta region.

Stakeholders and conflict management organizations have often hinted the government neglect of the Niger Delta in terms of basic amenities and social welfare as the major reason for uprising in the region.

Many armed groups in the past have carried out violent attacks against oil industries operating in the region With many oil installations destroyed.

The Niger Delta crisis is a big one, previous attempts by the past government to address grievances in the region have either failed or not been holistic.

The amnesty program is one of such attempts, with the resurgence of militancy in the region, it best to say much is needed to ensure lasting peace in Oil rich Niger Delta.

Militant groups operating in the region have made several threats in the past to cause havoc to oil installations, politicians, and some individuals considered as traitors in the  struggle, many of these groups have been committed to their promises while some are just good at making threats to instill fear in order to achieve their demands.

With the rise of the avengers militants in the Niger Delta region, the economic situation of Nigeria is no longer the same as they vow to cripple the economy.

Recently, the joint Niger Delta liberation front, also a militia sect threatened to launch six missiles on government owned assets in the country Nigeria.

As the the JNDLF militia came up with such threat, though they failed to keep to their promise, some people are beginning to wonder if some militants in the region really have missile capabilities which the Nigerian government do not even possess.

In my humble opinion, here are reasons why Niger Delta militants may not possess missiles capabilities as claimed.

1. Missiles are self propelled guided munition system: To successfully launch missiles, there has to be a system with a team of Tech experts, the militants may not have such.

2. Missiles components: missiles are made up of four components and they are: missiles guidance, flight system, engine and warhead. The flight system requires a sophisticated hovering aircraft or submarine to launch missiles, even North Korea failed recently to launch missiles from its submarine. The militants may not have the aforementioned components to launch missiles.

3. Missiles are different from shells: Non self propelled airborne explosive devices are generally referred to as shells and usually have a shorter range than missiles. Militants for now may have explosive devices that travels at shorter range, but they shouldn't be referred to as missiles.

4. Missiles are powered by rocket and jet engines. Rocket and jet engine is a feat that no terrorist group has been able to acquire, even the so called Islamic states militants do not possess missiles capabilities.

5. Only guided missiles can hit distant targets: It takes a lot of Technology to design guided missiles which travels through space or air to hit a target. For instance, militants threaten to hit Asso Villa, they would need a guided missile to do such all the way from Niger Delta. I'm not sure there is the existence of basic system that would power a guided missile from Niger to Asso villa.

6. Rocket is different from missiles: Militants for now possess rocket launchers and not missiles.
A powered, unguided munition is known as a rocket.
